As a health writer and health coach, Jill Patton wants to talk about well-being issues that affect our whole lives — at work, at home, and in our relationships.

“Diet culture” is of particular interest to me, because on the surface it seems to be about health, but really it’s about fear:

* Fear of being the wrong shape and size in a culture that prizes thinness and fitness.  (Weight bias in the workplace is a real thing, btw.)

* Fear of disease, though the relationship between weight and disease is often correlation, not causation; just losing the weight doesn’t necessarily address the underlying issue. (In fact, chronic dieting itself has been linked to negative health outcomes.)

* Fear of aging, fear of not being accepted, fear of “imperfection.”

I’m excited to talk with holistic health coach Holly Toscanini about what life could be like if we stepped off the treadmill of dieting and stepped into our power as creative, loving, whole people who are worth so much more than our relationship to gravity as expressed on the scale!

Healthy Exchange is a monthly gathering of kind, curious people who are interested in exploring the relationship between our personal well-being (however we define that for ourselves) and our sense of belonging and community. All perspectives are respectfully welcomed — there are no right or wrong answers to the questions we pose, though I hope you come away with helpful ideas and a sense of connection.
